Business congratulates WA Labor

11 March, 2017

The Western Australian business community has congratulated Mark McGowan and WA Labor on their state election win.

Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Western Australia (CCI) Chief Executive Officer Deidre Willmott said WA business looked forward to working with the newly-elected government on key issues like infrastructure planning, local content and further empowering the state’s defence industry.

“The Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Western Australian business community congratulate Mark McGowan and WA Labor on their election win,” Ms Willmott said.

“CCI hosted Mr McGowan at a business breakfast at the beginning of the election campaign and we look forward to continue working with the new Premier and his Cabinet as they embark on their plans for the future of this state.

“In particular, business has welcomed WA Labor’s commitment to establish Infrastructure WA and implement a 20-year infrastructure strategy – CCI has long-called for such a long-term plan as businesses tell us they need greater certainty to invest in big projects which create jobs for WA workers. An independent, bipartisan infrastructure body will also be able to boost transparency around infrastructure funding to ensure that funds allocated will provide the widest benefit to the greatest number of West Australians.

“The business community has also welcomed many of Labor’s other election commitments, including the appointment of a defence advocate to promote WA’s world-class defence industry and legislating the Western Australian Industry Participation Plan Act, to ensure small and medium sized contractors get full, fair and reasonable access to government contract opportunities.

“Business also welcomed Mark McGowan’s election commitment to ‘no new taxes on West Australians or increases in taxes on West Australians’ – four out of five jobs in WA are created by the private sector, so CCI is pleased that no new or increased taxes will be leveraged on the business community. CCI believes that helping business work helps West Australians work and Mr McGowan’s commitment will be instrumental in ensuring the business community has the funds needed to grow and create jobs.

“CCI would also like to take this opportunity to thank outgoing Premier Colin Barnett for his eight years of service to the business community and to the people of Western Australia. CCI sincerely thanks the Premier, Treasurer, their Cabinet and parliamentary colleagues for their commitment to industry and continued acknowledgement of the importance of business in creating jobs and prosperity for the wider community.

“Premier Colin Barnett oversaw one of the greatest periods of sustained economic growth and expansion in this state and the nation’s history. Through his support and under his guidance, this state saw once-in-a-generation investments into our mining and resources industries which underwrote a sustained period of wealth and prosperity that benefitted hundreds of thousands of families across this state. His vision for the City of Perth has also seen historic investment into infrastructure which has permanently changed the face of the city and helped Perth secure its future as a vibrant and modern cultural destination.

“The Western Australian business community once again thanks Premier Colin Barnett for his service and congratulates Mark McGowan and WA Labor on their election victory, and looks forward to working with the newly-elected Labor Government into the future.”
