Apprenticeship employment rewarding WA business

With a culture built on loyalty from their workers, it is no surprise CCI Member and Apprenticeship Support Australia client Jako Industries is investing heavily in the next generation.

The Jandakot-based company, established in 1972, has a history of providing apprenticeships to those looking to enter the mechanical services industry.

Service Manager John Lemon believes employing apprentices is a contributing factor to Jako Industries long-term success.

“We are able to train apprentices who then work their way through to the senior ranks where they may be out on jobs supervising projects under more experienced guys,” he says.

“It also opens doors for winning Government contracts in WA, as they want to work with businesses that invest in local training.

“I think that’s an important factor – not only do we get acknowledged through the apprenticeship schemes, but the company enjoys the process.”

Jako Industries has strong ties with TAFE Carlisle and TAFE Thornlie, which helps ensure the right people are selected for apprenticeships.

Lemon says young people who make themselves job ready are more likely to find employment.

“People that can land a place in the pre-apprenticeship program to obtain a Certificate II are more attractive to us as employers as they are job ready based on the curriculum of that first year.”

“We work closely with TAFE, who place those pre-apprenticeship students into different companies for work experience during their studies, such as ours.”

“The rewards are two-fold – for our business and for the apprentices.”

Lemon admits the recent economic climate impacted Jako Industries, but stressed the benefits of investing in the next generation.

“We are all subject to the ups and downs experienced in WA, but we believe we have a clientele that sees the reward of quality and long-term reliable people.”
