You are about to formally investigate a grievance— what is the role of the employee’s support person during the interview?
It can be good practice to offer the employee the option of bringing a support person along to an investigation interview.
If your employee chooses to bring a support person along, we recommend that the investigator outline the boundaries of the support person’s role at the outset.
In doing so, the investigator should explain that the support person’s role is to provide support, and not act as the employee’s advocate.
Your employee will generally be expected to answer the investigator’s questions themselves.
It is also important to outline that the interview is confidential.
This means the employee and their support person should be made aware that the investigation should not be discussed with anyone internally or externally, unless for the purpose of obtaining professional support or advice.
