WA Industry Welcomes Initiatives to Boost VET Commencements

09 March, 2017

Western Australia’s peak industry groups welcome announcements made by both parties to increase the uptake of vocational education and training programs. These include the Labor Party’s commitment to freezing TAFE fees for their first term of government if they are elected and the Liberal Party’s commitment to provide businesses with $5000 in incentives to generate 15,000 new apprenticeships and traineeships should they be returned to government.

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry WA, Engineers Australia, Australian Council for Private Education and Training (ACPET), Western Australian Road Transport Association, Master Builders Association of WA, Association of Mining and Exploration Companies and the Construction Contractors Association of WA stressed that industry needs to hire tertiary and VET graduates who are work ready.  These associations collectively represent 28,000 members with over 455,000 employees.

Industry groups want a comprehensive dialogue with the next government to develop a workforce skills training plan to sustain the WA economy.

Speaking on behalf of the group, ACPET Chief Executive Officer Rob Camm said “Western Australia needs a responsive training system to leverage the full capacity and innovation of both the private and public education and training sectors.”

WA industry believes that this will ensure a capable, home-grown, and technologically proficient workforce that will meet the current and future needs of employers.
