CCIWA announces Aaron Morey as Chief Economist

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry WA (CCIWA) is today pleased to announce the appointment of Aaron Morey as its new Chief Economist, effective 6 January 2020.

Aaron’s experience delivering economic reform will continue to strengthen CCIWA’s advocacy on behalf of the Western Australian business community. He joins CCIWA from the Office of the Hon Ben Wyatt MLA, where he was principal economic and commercial adviser to the WA Treasurer. In the Treasurer’s Office, Aaron undertook many of the most complex challenges in the portfolio, including red tape reduction, GST, asset sales and major governance reforms. He was instrumental to the delivery of a clear strategy for better managing the State’s finances and reducing debt.

Aaron draws upon nearly a decade of experience as a senior economist, including a significant period at the Productivity Commission, where he led policy development and undertook public inquiries into key issues including workforce regulation, intellectual property and infrastructure.

CCIWA Chief Executive, Chris Rodwell, said the appointment is a critical one not only for the business community but the State of Western Australia.

“Our Chief Economist plays a central role in advocating for WA to be the best place to live and do business. Aaron brings all the necessary credentials for the role. He has an acute understanding of the key challenges impacting our economy and a proven record in executing significant reform. It’s a real coup to have Aaron join us to lead our efforts as we develop our next tranche of recommendations for economic reform,” Mr Rodwell said.

The incoming Chief Economist is responsible for leading CCIWA’s economic reform and advocacy agenda.

Mr Morey said; “It is incredibly exciting to have been appointed Chief Economist of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry WA. CCIWA has a proud history of being at the centre of the big policy debates, and the WA business community has long proven itself the most innovative in the country.

Much is being made of global headwinds, and there is no doubt the business community faces some significant and unique economic challenges,” Mr Morey said.

“But with the centre of the global economy continuing to shift closer to our region, WA businesses are also presented with enormous and exciting opportunities. History shows that when the right policy conditions are in place, Western Australian businesses take their opportunities, and in doing so drive the entire nation forward.

I am committed and determined to work with government and the business community to ensure that WA businesses continue to have a solid economic platform, a platform from which they can innovate and invest with confidence, take on the challenges of today’s world, and win convincingly.”

In recent years, CCIWA has successfully championed our State’s biggest economic reforms, from the change to the GST formula, to the lifting of the burden of payroll tax on 12,000 WA businesses. As the peak business advocate, CCIWA looks forward to a new decade at the forefront of economic reform and advocacy with Aaron’s leadership.
