Progress towards consistent national COVID-19 approach

Aaron Morey

CCIWA Chief Economist

CCIWA welcomes the State Government’s updated approach to borders and COVID-19 settings in WA, announced today.

The new settings reflect the ongoing, successful management of COVID-19 in Australia and in WA, and bring WA into closer alignment with the rest of Australia.

It will provide relief to many Western Australian businesses. In particular, shifting the ‘very low risk’ classification threshold from 28 days to 14 days means WA can re-open to states sooner, increasing WA businesses’ connection with suppliers and customers in other states.

Confirmation that Western Australia will participate in the New Zealand travel bubble creates opportunities to attract tourists with higher average spending, and opens up a new source of workers, currently the biggest economic concern for WA businesses. The return to full capacity for more indoor and outdoor venues will be a relief to events and catering companies, which have been particularly hard-hit through the pandemic.

Having steadily highlighted the experience of members impacted by domestic border constraints, CCIWA is encouraged by the McGowan Government’s positive steps to update WA’s approach.
