$3000 lockdown compensation grants for small business

The State Government has announced WA businesses can access $3000 in compensation after Perth and Peel’s recent four-day lockdown.

Editor’s note: This article was updated on July 19.

Premier Mark McGowan said on July 9 that the one-off grants would be available to businesses that are able to prove losses incurred for perishable goods, cancellations or other unforeseen costs or demonstrate at least a 30 per cent reduction in revenues as a result of the lockdown.

On July 19 the Government clarified that the grants are open to eligible businesses that have an Australia-wide payroll of less than $4 million and are registered for GST purposes, and have revenue over $75,000.

CCIWA’s rapid-fire survey revealed an expected $245m hit to WA businesses, with an estimated average loss of $16,222 per small business.

For the first time, regional businesses will be eligible for the support, after CCIWA identified that they would lose out $10,404 due to reduced tourism spend.

CCIWA Chief Economist Aaron Morey welcomed the grants, including the support for regional businesses, though it was less than the request for up to $6000 per business.

He said it was also disappointing that the smallest of traders would be excluded from the scheme.

“It is a notable step up in the support offered in previous lockdowns, and has been secured by CCIWA’s work to inform the State Government’s approach,” he said.

“Critically, it will include impacted regional businesses – a priority call by CCIWA.”

Morey added that the community must work together to ensure that small business owners never incur these sorts of costs again, which meant that West Australians must get vaccinated.

Small businesses can apply online from 4:00pm Monday, July 19 with grant payments expected to commence by the end of the month.

Applications close at 11:59pm on Tuesday August 31.
