Electric vehicle equipment grants to help businesses ‘charge up’ decarbonisation plans

By CCIWA Editor

In a move to help businesses decarbonise, installing electric vehicle charging equipment is being boosted with WA Government grants.

Round 1 of Charge Up Workplace EV Charging Grants is open and will see the government award $15 million in co-funding grants to small and medium businesses, not-for-profit organisations and local government authorities to install EV charging equipment.

Access to infrastructure has been one of the main barriers holding businesses back from decarbonising, as outlined in CCIWA’s Climate Change Position Statement.

Carbon emissions from cars are a significant source of CO2 emissions, and EV chargers at business sites can contribute to reducing their carbon emissions by enabling employees and fleet vehicles to charge at work. They could also attract customers to businesses – for example adding further appeal to tourist destinations, cafés, recreation centres or wineries.

To avoid the evening peak and make the most of daytime energy, the grant has a strong focus on charging EVs during the day. It seeks to maximise charging opportunities at places Western Australians attend over the course of daytime activities.

What you need to know

  • You may be eligible for a grant up to $50,000 (metro) or $75,000 (regional).
  • If successful, it will be up to you to decide who can access your EV charging infrastructure. You may offer it as a benefit for your employees, use it for fleet vehicles, or you may use it to attract visitors to your business.
  • Round 1 applications are open now and close COB 12 May 2023.

Three easy steps to make an application

  1. Read the Guidelines and FAQs. This provides all the information you need to know before you decide to apply.
  2. Download the application checklist. This outlines all the information you need to prepare for your application. This includes: a list of approved software and EV chargers, and a sample quote.
  3. Apply on the online portal.

Questions about the grant program can be directed to [email protected] or 6551 4611.
