Reach Out experiences drive student success

CCIWA was pleased to organise Work Inspiration Reach Out experiences at construction and engineering services provider Civmec and equipment company United Forklift and Access Solutions as part of the partnership with children’s education charity, The Smith Family.

Work Inspiration Reach Out is one of The Smith Family’s programs, which gives students impacted by poverty the opportunity to visit workplaces so they can get an insight into potential career paths and local employment opportunities.

Civmec tour, Henderson

Twenty students, along with teachers and Smith Family staff members, recently ventured to Henderson for a tour of Civmec’s boat building facilities.

The day started with an overview of Civmec’s business following by obligatory occupational health and safety guidelines that must be followed when walking through the facilities, including wearing a hard hat, hi-vis vest and ear plugs. The tour guide also discussed the trade pathways available in the marine construction industry.

Walking through the boat building sheds, the students saw workers welding and busily working on the naval ships. The students were inquisitive, asking many questions to understand if working in construction would be a good career choice.

Some female workers also joined the group to discuss their job roles in construction and how they secured a job role at Civmec.

At the end of the tour, the students were given a gift bag with lots of goodies.

United Forklift and Access Solutions tour, Kewdale

A group of students and The Smith Family staff did a half-day tour of United’s warehouse facilities in Kewdale.

The human resources manager identified and discussed the many pathways available in the crane and forklift industries. The job roles included mechanical, electrical, administration, sales and marketing.

Two young people discussed their experiences at United Group. One of them started in a reception role and is now progressing to be part of the sales team. A mechanical apprentice also discussed his pathway and career aspirations. The students asked many questions, trying to uncover what it is like working in this industry.

One of the students said they were considering a change of career direction as a result of the tour.

It was fantastic to see the students get exposed to different industries and career options and show them they can achieve amazing things.
