Engagement Forum a learning, listening success

Forum partners The Chamber of Commerce and Industry WA, WA Department of Education, Anglicare WA, Youth Futures, Allure Creative, and Edith Cowan University (ECU) School of Education co-ordinated a successful Engagement Forum WA 2023 on Friday, November 24 at ECU in Mount Lawley.

Kicking off the day, Professor Tim Corney from Victoria University delivered a keynote address about adolescence. A distinguished panel of community leaders then took the stage, offering their perspectives under the theme ‘Learning Through Listening’.

The panel featured Commissioner for Children and Youth WA, Jacqueline McGowan-Jones; Assistant Ombudsman WA for Aboriginal Engagement and Collaboration, Laurence Riley; CEO of the Noongar Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Tim Milson; and Anglicare General Manager of Strategy for Aboriginal Service Strategy, Jarred Wall.

Insights shared by these community leaders addressed critical issues related to education, community engagement, the empowerment of young Aboriginal people and the commercial opportunities for Aboriginal people in business.

Wall highlighted the strength of his family and his profound connection to his Aboriginal heritage. He underscored how this connection has played a pivotal role in shaping his personal success, professional achievements, and musicianship as he wowed the delegates with a song from the Noongar Language Opera Koolbardi wer Wardong.

The day continued with breakout sessions focusing on building an inclusive culture in education and training, trauma-informed practice, innovation in hybrid training delivery, and student wellbeing. These sessions provided practical insights and strategies to support young people.

The final keynote address by Joshua Patrick, a young carer and Northam Senior High School student, added a deeply personal touch to the event. He shared his inspiring journey, navigating school and home life while managing caring responsibilities, emphasising the resilience and determination young individuals bring to their education journeys.
