A group of students were given a first-hand look at manufacturing company Altrad during a tour organised by the CCIWA Education Development Fund and The Smith Family.
Altrad, which has an office based in the Kwinana Industrial area, is a multinational company specialising in rope access, welding and mechanical services solutions for the oil and gas, energy and construction industries.
As part of the tour, students were given a presentation detailing the big mining machinery built by the company, including a rail reclaimer and a mud mat for the mining industries.
They were told that to work at Altrad they needed a good work ethic, be willing to get their hands dirty, and be good at maths.
Altrad Project Development Manager Alex Reid said they were now organising more student tours to build awareness of what to expect when someone starts a trade in their workshop.
The students proceeded to tour the massive workshop and received thorough explanations on the different types of welding, fabrication, and mechanical work, and the types of available apprenticeship pathways.
The group also viewed the Rope Access Technician training centre, which helps to upskill riggers and dogman technicians.
Once back from the tour, Alex offered career advice, saying that starting in an apprenticeship can be a baseline from where they can work up the corporate ladder.
The tour then concluded with Alex giving away two rugby league tops from teams that Altrad sponsor.
