Community members, business owners and industry professionals are now able to add their voice to a renewed call to cut unfair payroll tax rates in WA.

In a bid to create better, fairer outcomes for WA businesses, CCIWA Head of Policy Dr Anthea Wesley said the new platform aimed to give a voice to businesses of all sizes, across every sector of the economy.
“The average business in WA is paying more than they would in any other state, despite our nation-leading economy and strong budget surpluses,” she said.
“Businesses can jump onto the Keeping WA Strong website and sign our petition to let the government know how payroll tax is impacting them.”
On average, WA has the highest payroll tax burden of any state – meaning WA businesses are at a disadvantage as the current system stifles growth, slows innovations and sends WA jobs over East and offshore.
Wesley said small and family businesses were under real pressure as they reach the threshold quite quickly and are simultaneously grappling with rising costs.
Payroll tax in WA kicks in when a business has a wages bill of $1 million. CCIWA is calling for the threshold to be lifted to $1.3m in wages.
“Wages have increased significantly in WA since payroll tax was last adjusted, so many businesses have found themselves liable for payroll tax without hiring a single extra worker or making any extra profit,” Wesley said.
