Five ways to fire up your employees

By Beatrice Thomas

In today’s often fast-paced work environment, and amid the challenges of the past year, it’s normal that your employees may be feeling burnt out and lacking motivation.

But rather than dwell on any sub-par performances of staff – or within your business - get proactive by re-energising your workforce.

By investing time in your staff, you’ll reap the benefits of greater productivity while driving up your staff retention rate.

Business psychologist and founder of Reinvention Consulting, Vanessa Vershaw, shares her top five ways to fire up your employees:

1. Get them excited about the future and what could be!

Now more than ever being able to engage your creative brain and imagine the possibilities of what the future holds is a key part of creating an exciting future.

To do this we need to take time to reflect on our BIG work and life goals, imagine how we are going to get there and take steps to realise our goals – no matter how impossible they may seem because seeing is believing!

2. Get them curious - use their imagination & curiosity to create the business ideas of the future

Being curious and actively learning and challenging ourselves to explore different options is a key part of being future-fit.

But it takes an open mind, a comfort with ambiguity and blowing up pre-conceived ideas to test your assumptions and try something new – no matter how crazy it may sound.

3. Get them energised - help them to be psychologically and physically healthy to be the best they can be

Looking after your mental and physical wellbeing is the secret to sustained high performance.

How is your energy being drained from not being fit, not eating right? What about those toxic relationships sucking your energy that you need to cull from your life?

Doing this frees up your stores of energy to be more focussed at work and fire on all cylinders no matter what situation you face. Starting and finishing your day with some mindful moments helps to boost your natural energy stores and feel positive.

4. Get them listening - to each other, to their clients and also to themselves which leads to greater workplace connection

Feeling valued and heard is the greatest gift you can give another human being. Taking the time to be fully present, go deeper in your relationships and building meaningful connections is critical to creating a sense of belonging and an empathy-led culture.

When we’re connected, we not only deliver our best work and make better decisions, but we also enjoy the ride as well.

5. Get them playful - not everything has to be serious

A playful workplace breeds greater ideas, higher performance, next-level productivity and helps us cope with the tough stuff.

Think about when you last watched a good comedy and how it made you feel. Laughter and play are absolute necessities to living a balanced and fulfilling life.

They’re also powerful antidotes for workplace stress and enhance our feeling of well-being at work. When we can share these experiences with our colleagues at work, morale is boosted exponentially and team performance skyrockets.
