CCIWA has welcomed the restructuring of Western Australia’s government departments.
The changes, announced by Premier Roger Cook, will see the creation of new departments and the merger of others.
Under the shake-up, responsibility for WA’s defence industry would move into the Department of Premier and Cabinet.
CCIWA Chief Executive, Dr Peter Cock, said the decision shows how significant defence industry including the AUKUS agreement will be for WA’s future economic prosperity.
“This demonstrates the importance and future potential of WA’s defence industry and the economic opportunities that will flow from the AUKUS agreement,” Dr Cock said.
“By moving the defence industry into the Premier’s own department, the Government is underscoring the fact that the defence industry is a critical part of WA’s economic diversification.”
The changes will also see the creation of a new Housing and Works Department to oversee the development of new residential properties and smaller government infrastructure.
“We welcome the focus on easing the pressure on WA’s housing supply, which has been a significant barrier not only for families looking for a home, but also for businesses looking to attract workers into WA,” Dr Cock said.
“It’s critical for an economy like ours to have the capacity to house the skilled workers we need, particularly in regional WA.
“Whilst we welcome the focus on delivering the mega projects that are so vital to the state, CCIWA also urges the government not to forget small business who is actually responsible for much of the delivery.
“The government and Premier Cook have a strong mandate and CCIWA stands ready to work productively on behalf of businesses to assist in delivering for the State of Western Australia.”
