Four reasons you need social media

By Paul Wilson

Having a presence on social media, whether it’s Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube or LinkedIn – is a cheap and easy way to market your business.

Here’s why you need it:

1. Take control of your brand

Use the mantra of holistic and consistent marketing to consciously craft your reputation on your chosen values, standards and professionalism by offering professional tips, advice and well-considered, timely blogs. Content is king here.

2. Your customers are already there

In 2018 the number of people on the internet topped four billion – more than half the world’s population.

More than 3 billion people worldwide use social media every month, up 13 per cent on 2017.

Another report shows 50 per cent of Australia’s population is on Facebook at least once a day, 15 million Australians access YouTube each month, nine million Instagram and 4.7 million Twitter and 4.5 million LinkedIn.

In Perth, 61 per cent of the population check social media sites daily.

3. Stake your claim

Only 31 per cent of businesses with 0-4 employees had a social media presence, compared with 80 per cent of businesses with 200 or more employees, a Bankwest Curtin Economics Centre report found.

Yet eight out of 10 businesses still don’t have a social media plan. Establish yourself while the field is uncrowded.

4. It’s a key influencer

More than half of all social media users read reviews before making a purchase; most read up to five.

About a quarter of social media users post business reviews or ratings. Of those, 77 per cent post up to 10 a year.

Having a presence on social media, whether it’s Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube or LinkedIn – is a cheap and easy way to market your business.
