Collaborative initiative tackles barriers to neurodivergent employment

A new collaborative program developed by Mentor it Forward aims to address the underrepresentation of neurodivergent individuals in the workforce through a systemic, community-wide approach.

The Neurodiversity Employment Inclusion Continuum (NDEIC) program responds to a well-known challenge in the disability sector: while many neurodivergent individuals have valuable skills, they often face barriers when transitioning from school or study into employment.

NDEIC aims to change this by creating a connected, end-to-end support pathway – incorporating mentoring, education and work accessibility initiatives.

The program brings together partners across education, training and industry to ensure individuals are supported at every stage. This includes schools, universities, employers and mentoring organisations working as one coordinated system rather than in isolation.

NDEIC focuses on three key areas:

  • Education – building skills, awareness and readiness
  • Mentorship – providing guidance, confidence and real-world insight
  • Access to work – connecting individuals with inclusive employers and career pathways

Key partners include Curtin University and the WA Data Science Innovation Hub, supported by the team at CCIWA’s Ability Link project, as well as specialist education providers. Together, they form a strong system that supports individuals and employers.

Importantly, the program also works with workplaces to improve inclusion practices – helping businesses better understand neurodiversity and create environments where people can thrive.

By connecting education, mentorship and employment, NDEIC offers a scalable model that benefits individuals, families, employers and the broader community. It represents a meaningful step towards a more inclusive workforce across Western Australia.
