The Smith Family Charity

CCIWA is proud to support The Smith Family charity

With Members’ voluntary contributions via our Education Development Fund (EDF), we are able to help 75 young Australians overcome educational inequality caused by poverty by supporting The Smith Family.

We know education is a powerful change agent. Keeping children in school for longer – and keeping them engaged in learning – offers better life outcomes.

The Smith Family, a national children’s education charity, exists to support the education of children experiencing disadvantage so that every child has the opportunity to change their future. Their core Learning for Life program supports almost 60,000 young Australians.

Each child in the program receives:

  • Financial support: for school essentials such as books and uniforms.
  • Personal support: for the child and their family to help children stay motivated at school, complete their education and go on to further training or work.
  • Practical support: through their extra learning and mentoring programs tailored to each child’s needs.

Members’ contributions, together with CCIWA’s support, are helping to empower these young individuals to harness education and fostering brighter opportunities for our future workforce.

Together, we can build a more buoyant future where all young people have the chance to thrive.

Smith Family Charity & CCIWA Collaboration Success

Each year, CCIWA works with the Smith Family team to organise Work Inspiration Reach Out experiences with CCIWA members. This means we are able to provide disadvantaged youth with career excursions they would not normally get access too. Work Inspiration Reach Out gives students impacted by poverty the opportunity to visit workplaces so they can get an insight into potential career paths and local employment opportunities in WA.

In 2023, we took students to construction and engineering services provider Civmec; and equipment company United Forklift and Access Solutions. In 2024, we are working with a number of CCIWA members including Komatsu, MACA and Ausclad to showcase their industries to local students.

Twenty students, along with teachers and Smith Family staff members, recently ventured to Henderson for a tour of Civmec’s boat building facilities.

The day started with an overview of Civmec’s business then the obligatory occupational health and safety guidelines that must be followed when walking through the facilities, including wearing a hard hat, hi-vis vest and ear plugs. The tour guide also discussed the trade pathways available in the marine construction industry

Walking through the boat building sheds, the students saw workers welding and busily working on the naval ships. The students were inquisitive asking many questions trying to understand if working in construction would be a good career choice.

Some female workers also joined the group to discuss their job roles in construction and how they secured a job role at Civmec.

At the end of the tour, the students were given a gift bag with lots of goodies.

A group of students and The Smith Family staff recently did a half-day tour of United’s warehouse facilities in Kewdale . The human resources manager identified and discussed the many pathways available in the crane and forklift industries. The job roles included mechanical, electrical, administration sales and marketing.

Two young people discussed their experiences at United Group. One of them started in a reception role and is now progressing to be part of the sales team. A mechanical apprentice also discussed his pathway and career aspirations. The students asked many questions, trying to uncover what it is like working in this industry.

One of the students said they were considering a change of career direction as a result of the tour.

It was fantastic to see the students get exposed to different industries and career options and show them they can achieve amazing things.
