How to answer your staff’s questions on the COVID-19 vaccine

As the COVID vaccine is rolled out, workers will have plenty of questions for their employers.

Here, CCIWA has suggested ways to answer some of the most common COVID-19 queries.

  1. When will I get the vaccine?

The Federal Government’s vaccine eligibility checker will provide an idea of when you will receive the COVID-19 jab. People working in high-risk industries such as healthcare are prioritised, as well as the vulnerable and elderly.

  1. Who needs to get it?

It is recommended that all adults over the age of 16 get the COVID vaccine. It has not yet been advised that children need to get it, but this advice may change.

  1. Is it free?

Yes – the COVID-19 vaccine is free to everyone living in Australia.

  1. Is it safe?

Vaccines will only be made available to Australians once proven safe for use by the Therapeutic Goods Administration.

  1. Do I still need to practice COVID safe practices while the vaccine is being rolled out?

Yes. According to Healthy WA it is vital to maintain good hygiene and social distancing, as well as staying at home when unwell.

  1. Do I need to get the vaccine?

While the COVID-19 jab is recommended, it is not mandatory for Australians.

  1. Where can I get the vaccine?

The Healthy WA website will contain updates on where and when you can get the COVID-19 vaccine.

  1. Can I still catch COVID after getting a vaccine?

RMIT Vice-Chancellor’s Research Fellow Dr Kylie Quinn told the ABC “the jury is still out on exactly how much of an impact these vaccines will have on infection and transmission, but there is promising early data to suggest they will be helpful to some extent.”

  1. Can I choose which vaccine I receive?

No you cannot. ABC National Medical Reporter Sophie Scott explains that quarantine and border workers, frontline healthcare workers, residents and staff in aged care and disability facilities will get the first phase of the vaccine – being the Pfizer variant. Pretty much everyone else will receive the AstraZenaca jab.
